    Overview
Dr. Bazargan is Professor, Faculty Trustee, and Director of Research at Department of Family Medicine and Public Health program at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine & Science (CDU). In addition, he is also Adjunct Professor at UCLA School of Medicine, Department of Family Medicine. He is a Medical Sociologist with extensive training in the fields of aging, research methodology, evaluation, and statistics.

Dr. Bazargan received his PhD in Medical Sociology from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He has been a member of the Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science (CDU) faculty since 1993, and was previously on the faculty of the Xavier University. Dr. Bazargan entire research related activities is concentrated around the health status and health disparities experienced by racial/ethnic minorities and socio-economically disadvantaged populations. He has conducted several large population and community based surveys on access and utilization of health services by underserved minority older adults.

Dr. Bazargan has authored more than 110 scientific papers many of which address access to care, barriers to medical care, use of health services, racial disparities, and health outcomes among older adult African Americans. During the last 30 years, he has been funded by several federal agencies including the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), the Administration for Children and Family (AHF), and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to conduct research and interventional study among minority populations.

Since graduated in 1990, Dr. Bazargan has established a strong foundation as a medical sociologist researcher and health disparities scholar, particularly in the RCMI community. He has played a major role in submitting and implementing RCMI research projects. Nationally, he is recognized for conducting research among older African-American adults, particularly in the area of physical and mental health status, health care utilization, and medication consumption.

Specifically, some of his major accomplishment within last 10 years are:
    • He played a major role in the leadership of CDU, both as the President of Academic Senate for 6 years, and now as the Faculty Trustee at CDU.
    • He was the Co-Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee of CDU from 2017-2022.
    • Two of his R25 grants (totaling $5,000,000), which targeted the development of minority junior faculty, were funded within the last 6 years. The over-arching goal of the NIMHD-funded CRECD Program is to support educational activities that enhance the diversity of the biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research workforce.
    • Three of his grant applications were funded by CMS to reduce health disparities associated with medication-related challenges among older Latino and African-American hypertensive and diabetic adults.
    • He have served several major institutional grants, including Project EXPORT, the AXIS program, the CTSI program, RTRN, and the Cancer Research Center at the CDU.
